Partners and Education

As a teaching hospital, VAMC Salem provides a full range of services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.

Academic Partners

The Salem VAMC is a primary teaching hospital for two medical schools; the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Our medical residents from the the University of Virginia aaor Carilion Health Systems are training in surgery, internal medicine, psychiatry, family practice, and ophthalmology. We have interns or residents in pharmacy, podiatry, and for psychology as well. We train nurses from Virginia Western Community College, Radford University, the University of Virginia, and ECPI. Altogether we train over 500 students and residents from over 60 heatlh career programs across the country.

Veterans Service Organizations

VAMC Salem maintains a good working relationship with all of our veteran service organization (VSO) partners. We regularly brief our VSO representatives on changes impacting veterans' health care.

A Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) has been established which includes stakeholders from a number of veterans groups. The VAC meets quarterly.

US Department of Defense

As a participant in the US Department of Defense TRICARE Program*, VAMC Salem serves as the main referral source for women's health and orthopedic specialty appointments.
